Havator Group grows in Norway

11.02.2008

Polar Lift, the subsidiary of Havator Group, and Polarbase AS, which operates in the Rypefjord harbor in Hammerfest, have joined forces. Polar Lift provides harbor crane services and Polarbase is in charge of support services for the traffic to oil rigs, oil fields, and gas fields. The new company offering harbor crane services will be called Polar Lift AS, of which Polarbase AS will own 50 percent.

"Our goal is to be a major harbor crane company in the whole Barents region. Thanks to this new joint enterprise, we can now operate more effectively in the Barents region and offer also Havator Group's special transport and installation services", explains Herold Paulsen, the CEO of Polarbase AS.

Polarbase AS is a part of NorSeaGroup, which is Europe's leading provider of logistics and support services to the offshore and onshore industries. At the moment, Polarbase AS's supply base in Rypefjord covers an area of 22 hectares. Polarbase AS has a partnership agreement with Statoil until the year 2030. According to the Chairman of the Board of Havator Group, Erkki Hanhirova, the new joint enterprise is seeking opportunities to expand its activities to places such as Kirkkoniemi and Murmansk.

In 2003-2007, Havator Group was the largest Finnish company that participated in the construction of the first liquefaction plant for natural gas in Europe. Raw material is conducted to the plant through a 140-kilometre pipeline from the Snøhvit (Snow White) undersea gas field. 50-60 of Havator's employees worked in Norway, along with dozens of the company's blue-and-yellow cranes.

The Snow White gas field includes two satellite areas that go by the names Albatross and Askeladd. The intention is to pump gas from Snow White and its satellites for the next 25-30 years.

"We at Havator firmly believe that the company showed such strong evidence of its skills in the first phase of the construction that there will be work in the second and third phases of the gas project as well. Also generally speaking, we see the Barents region as having great future potential for growth", Hanhirova says.

"Thanks to this joint enterprise, we can utilize Polarbase's extensive network in the gas and oil industries. We are a Nordic company that wants to follow the local practices of each country. That is why in Finland, Havator is a Finnish company, in Sweden it is a Swedish company, and in Norway a Norwegian company", Hanhirova concludes.
